Revival Of The Traditional Rpg Genre: Text-Based Mmorpg Revolution
Browser based MMORPGs. They come and go almost daily, in dozens. Most of them are so similar to each other that one eventually begins to wonder “what could ever possibly change in this area? Why try anything new?”
Well, you may very well think that you’ve seen it all, but…
Metaplane Entertainment, developer of the online games, seems to think otherwise.
Its new game, Anvilglint Chronicles, which is released in less than twenty days on the 2nd of April 2010, promises an unexpected turn of events.
“We’re not going for the beautiful cover, we’re aiming for a thoughtful, meaningful content (without forgetting about the cover completely though)”, says one of the game’s developers, “A lot of the modern MMORPGs work around the same basic game principles or ‘patterns’. They’re often primitive and very linear, although filled with flash or based on Java, or even on a self-made “browser-based engine” technology that everyone has to download. And in my opinion, that is the point when the game actually stops being browser-based. What’s the point if I have to install something on my PC?
So, we’ve decided to reverse this online game standard and give our players an interactive, non-linear game that looks and, most importantly, feels great requiring absolutely nothing other than possession of a basic web-browser.
Anvilglint Chronicles is a text-based MMORPG with a text-based game’s requirements, but with much better graphics. We’re often calling it a text-based game of the next generation.”
Apart from the mysterious “semi text” technology of the game’s engine, it really does offer something that’s been long forgotten in an MMO world: non-linear, interactive storyline.
Developers state that actions of all players will affect the surrounding world, outcome of quests, player reputation and reaction of NPCs.
“For that purpose we’ve added an interactive dialogue system to the game, like the one seen in well-known traditional single player RPGs, such as Planescape Torment, Baldur’s Gate, and other games of this genre, that all of us played and remember even today. Why is that? Well, because let’s admit they were awesome, thoughtful and contained a really great atmosphere.
We’re hoping that Anvilglint Chronicles and its dialogues, plot and atmosphere remind you of that addictive feeling of life in a fantasy world along with its other characters. But in an MMO way.”
Whether or not they succeed in recreation of a single player Role-Playing Game’s atmosphere in a MMORPG the time will undoubtedly show.
As for now, the game’s developers invite everyone to join their project and promise extras, bonuses and ever real money for registering before the game is released.
Will Anvilglint Chronicles become the next hit among the online games? Or will it simply dissolve in the crowd? Questions to those answers remain unknown.
But in any case, this game looks like a very interesting development to keep your eyes on.
